Port Management Implementation Team

While being engaged in consulting and development of ports and terminals worldwide, RMC has noticed that demand exists for a PORT MANAGEMENT IMPLEMENTATION TEAM (PMIT).

Especially during the past years the construction of new ports and terminals as well as the take over of concessions has increased considerably. These activities lead to an increasing demand for highly qualified and motivated port management staff.

Recruitment of the right people for a container terminal is more of an art than a science. So much of every day terminal life consists of coping with change, dealing with the unexpected, maintaining team dynamics and chasing productivity regardless of the weather. Rules will be laid down, controls put in place, the best equipment provided and discipline enforced but good results can still not be guaranteed. What is needed is a team comprising the right mix of solid experience and flare, discipline and ability to “think out-of-the-box”, practical and academic. However, due to the numerous activities taking place all over the world simultaneously, there exists a shortage of such qualified terminal management staff.

Most terminal projects are set up by more than one owner in order to reduce risk allocation and financial burdens for the single company. Generally, one of the owners employs the Project Manager. The PMIT concept, however, foresees to provide a strictly neutral Port Management Implementation Team, so that it is guaranteed that all owners’ interests are dealt with equally.

The team will operate as follows: PMIT takes over the terminal installation for a defined period of time, in which the team runs the terminal and at the same time recruits and trains the future local management personnel. The typical PMIT will (depending on client’s requirements) include all the main management functions.
